Gardens and Compost
Compost
To enhance the quality and value of both biochar and compost, it's recommended to add biochar at a rate of 1:20 by volume (1 part biochar to 20 parts compost).
Amending gardens with compost-biochar mix
Apply your compost-biochar mix to garden soil at a 1:10 ratio by volume (one part biochar-compost mix to 10 parts garden soil). Apply evenly throughout the top 10 cm of soil. For raised pots or beds, change the ratio to 1:5 by volume. The biochar-compost mix combines the benefits of compost and biochar.
Gardens
If adding directly to the garden, mix biochar with soil at a ratio of 1:30 by volume (one part biochar to 30 parts soil). Apply evenly to the top 10 cm of soil (i.e., apply about 3.3 litres of biochar for every one square meter of garden).
Tip for raised beds or pots
If compost isn’t available, mix biochar with nutrient rich soil at a ratio of 1:1. Let sit for 3-5 days in a damp environment. Once enriched, apply the mixture at a 1:50 ratio to raised beds or pot soil.
Testimonials
Luc P.
We added biochar to our raised garden bed this year to help our veggies. To charge the biochar we added chicken manure and mixed into the soil before planting. We soaked the bed with water and let it settle. I grew up on a farm but I’ve never seen zucchini leaves that big!
Lawn Application - Before and After
The transformation included soil aeration, fertilizer and grass seed addition, charged biochar with chicken manure and worm castings, and topdressing soil.
